Christian Eriksen has cast doubt on his Inter Milan future after less than a year with the club after publicly admitting that the move has not worked out.

The midfielder was signed with much fanfare from Tottenham Hotspur in January this year for £17.5million, but has found himself restricted to the substitutes bench for much of this season.

‘This isn’t what I dreamed of,’ Eriksen told TV2. ‘All players want to play as much as possible, but the coach decides who gets to go on the pitch.

‘It is a strange situation, as the fans want to see me playing more and so would I, but the coach has different ideas and as a player I have to respect that.’

Eriksen was signed to be the creative centre around which Antonio Conte’s midfield would be built. However, with Conte insisting on playing a 3-5-2 formation, there’s no room for the Danish superstar.

Eriksen has made just three starts in Serie A this season and did not complete any of those games, being substituted in each of them. Overall he has played five league games, with no goals or assists, and only making it past the hour mark once.

Speaking on international duty for Denmark, the 28-year-old suggested he was open to an exit from Inter in January.

‘I am concentrating on my football, then when the transfer window opens we will see if something will happen or not,’ Eriksen said.

Forced to stay at Inter’s training complex, he said that he received a warning from Italian police over breaking lockdown protocols, and struggled to maintain his fitness levels with a makeshift training programme.

The interruptions have meant Eriksen has not regained the sensational form he displayed at Spurs which prompted Inter to sign him after the Dane agitated for a move away from White Hart Lane.

In September, Eriksen was somewhat embarrassingly placed on Inter’s transfer list, with the club ready to accept a cut price of £35million to get his £6.5million-a-year wages off their books.

He was reportedly offered back to Spurs, who rejected the deal, and Paris Saint-Germain have also shown an interest.

At Tottenham, Eriksen was the team’s indispensable creative engine, playing 226 Premier League games and contributing 51 goals and 66 assists.
